World Elephant Day: When We Stop Fighting Elephants, Can We Start Living With Them?
Every year on 12 August, World Elephant Day asks the world to pause and think about one of Earth's most extraordinary animals.
The elephant is enormous, powerful and intelligent. It can reshape a forest simply by feeding, moving and trampling through it. It can remember landscapes, follow traditional routes and maintain complex social relationships.
It can also destroy a farmer's crop in a single night.
That last fact is where conservation becomes complicated.
For millions of people, elephants are symbols of wisdom, strength, prosperity and cultural identity. In India, the elephant is not merely another wild animal. It is the country's National Heritage Animal, and India supports around 60% of the world's wild Asian elephant population.
But admiration does not automatically produce coexistence.
Across India's elephant landscapes, forests are being fragmented, agricultural fields are expanding, roads and railway lines cut across movement routes, settlements grow closer to forests, and traditional elephant pathways become increasingly difficult to traverse.
The result is a landscape in which an elephant moving through a route it may have used for generations can suddenly find itself walking through someone's paddy field, plantation or village.
The elephant sees a landscape.
The farmer sees a crop.
The government sees a conflict hotspot.
And the conservationist sees a broken corridor.
This is the deeper story behind World Elephant Day.
It is not simply about saving elephants.
It is about asking whether human development can leave enough space for other species to continue existing.
And somewhere in Assam, a village is demonstrating what can happen when the question changes from “How do we stop elephants?” to “How can we live with them?”
Hatikhuli: Where an elephant was once an enemy
In Hatikhuli-Ronghang, in Assam's Nagaon region near the Karbi Anglong landscape, elephants were once associated with fear, crop destruction and confrontation.
For farmers, an elephant herd entering agricultural fields was not a beautiful wildlife spectacle.
It could mean a year's work disappearing overnight.
Paddy fields could be damaged. Property could be destroyed. People could be injured or killed. Elephants themselves could be chased, injured or killed in attempts to protect human settlements and crops.
This is the uncomfortable reality of human–elephant conflict: both sides can become victims of the same landscape problem.
But Hatikhuli began to experiment with a radically different idea.
Instead of treating every elephant entering the agricultural landscape as an intruder, conservationists and villagers began asking a simple question:
What if elephants had food available before they reached people's crops?
That idea became associated with Hati Bondhu-“Friends of Elephants.”
The initiative is closely associated with conservationist Pradip Kumar Bhuyan, who has devoted decades to elephant conservation, and with people including Binod Dulu Bora, who helped advance the work on the ground. The Hati Bondhu philosophy is built around empathy, food security, habitat connectivity and community participation rather than simply attempting to drive elephants away.
The principle sounds almost deceptively simple:
Feed, don't fight.
But behind those three words lies a much bigger conservation idea.
What if the problem isn't the elephant?
Imagine walking through a forest that your family has used for generations.
You know where water is.
You know where food grows.
You know the path to another part of the forest.
Now imagine that, over time, roads appear across the landscape. Farms expand. Buildings come up. Forest patches become separated. Fences appear. A railway line cuts through the route.
Your old path still exists in your memory.
But physically, it no longer exists.
Where do you go?
For an elephant, the answer may be a crop field.
This is why describing every elephant entering farmland as an “intrusion” can be misleading.
From the farmer's perspective, the elephant has entered a human space.
From the elephant's ecological perspective, however, it may simply be moving through a fragmented landscape in search of food, water or access to another habitat.
The Wildlife Institute of India describes habitat loss, degraded forage and reduced landscape connectivity as major factors pushing elephants into closer contact with people. India's current conservation framework therefore increasingly recognises that elephant conservation cannot be limited to protected forests alone; it must include the landscapes connecting them.
This distinction is critical.
Human–elephant conflict is not simply an elephant problem. It is a land-use problem, a food-security problem, a landscape-planning problem and, ultimately, a governance problem.
And if we misunderstand the cause, we are unlikely to design the right solution.
India: A country where elephants and people share the same landscape
India's relationship with elephants is extraordinary.
The country has one of the world's most important remaining populations of Asian elephants. The last conventional nationwide elephant population estimate reported by the Government of India was 29,964 elephants in 2017, compared with an estimated 27,669–27,719 elephants in 2007.
But India has now entered a new era of elephant population monitoring.
The Wildlife Institute of India, under Project Elephant and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, conducted India's first DNA-based national elephant population estimation using non-invasive genetic sampling and spatial capture–recapture modelling. The SAIEE 2021–25 assessment estimated 22,446 wild elephants.
That number requires careful interpretation
The difference between the 2021–25 estimate and the 2017 estimate represents an apparent reduction of roughly 25%, but this should not be interpreted as a straightforward 25% decline in India's elephant population. The newer DNA-based methodology provides a different statistical and scientific baseline, making direct comparison with earlier estimates inappropriate.
This is an important distinction when discussing India's elephant population. Changes in reported numbers must be interpreted in the context of the methodology, sampling design, geographic coverage and statistical uncertainty of each assessment. Rather than treating estimates produced using different methods as a simple time series, elephant population trends should be evaluated using comparable methodologies over time.
What remains clear, however, is that India's elephants face significant and continuing pressures from habitat loss, fragmentation, degradation of food and water resources, infrastructure development and increasing human–elephant interactions. Protecting not only elephant numbers but also the landscapes and ecological corridors that sustain them is therefore essential to their long-term survival.
The larger message is not simply whether there are “more” or “fewer” elephants.
It is whether elephants still have connected, functional landscapes in which populations can move, feed, breed and survive safely.
India currently has 33 Elephant Reserves, while the Government has ground-validated 150 elephant corridors across 15 elephant-range states. These corridors are important because elephants do not recognise administrative boundaries.
A forest patch by itself may not be enough.
An elephant population needs a landscape.
It needs routes between forests.
It needs access to seasonal resources.
It needs water.
It needs breeding space.
It needs safe movement.
And, increasingly, it needs human communities willing to share portions of the landscape with it.
The elephant is not merely a large herbivore
To understand why losing elephants matters, we need to look beyond their size.
Elephants are often described as ecosystem engineers because their movement and feeding can physically alter habitats.
They open pathways.
They break branches.
They disturb vegetation.
They create clearings.
They influence forest structure.
And they disperse seeds over considerable distances.
Research from Indian forests has documented viable seeds of numerous woody species in elephant dung, demonstrating the role of Asian elephants in seed dispersal and forest regeneration processes.
In other words, when an elephant walks through a forest, it is not simply passing through.
It is participating in ecological processes.
The disappearance of elephants therefore has consequences beyond the disappearance of one species.
It can change how ecosystems function.
This is why elephant conservation is also forest conservation, biodiversity conservation and ecosystem resilience conservation.
But conservation cannot ask farmers to carry all the costs
There is another side of the story that conservation discussions sometimes fail to acknowledge.
Imagine being a small farmer whose paddy field is destroyed repeatedly.
You have invested money, labour, seeds, fertiliser and months of work.
Then, one night, a herd of elephants arrives.
The conservation message may say:
“Protect the elephants.”
The farmer may understandably respond:
“Who will protect my livelihood?”
That question is legitimate.
Conservation cannot survive by asking rural communities to absorb the economic cost of protecting wildlife while society at large receives the ecological benefits.
This is why human–elephant coexistence must also be livelihood coexistence.
Compensation systems matter.
Crop-loss assessment matters.
Early-warning systems matter.
Insurance mechanisms matter.
Community participation matters.
Alternative income opportunities matter.
And most importantly, land-use planning must reduce the probability of conflict in the first place.
A compensation cheque after a crop is destroyed is not the same as preventing the crop from being destroyed.
The long-term objective should be to move from reactive compensation to preventive coexistence.
The Hatikhuli idea: Give elephants something to eat
This is where the story of Hatikhuli becomes especially interesting.
Rather than viewing elephants only as animals that must be pushed out of farms, the community began creating areas where elephants could obtain food.
The initiative involved cultivating elephant-preferred vegetation and agricultural crops specifically to provide food for elephants.
The idea has also been described as an “elephant restaurant”, a dedicated food area where elephants could feed rather than entering farmers' fields. Local communities, agricultural authorities and the Forest Department were involved in supporting the initiative. Reports from the area described a decline in conflict as elephants increasingly used the designated food areas.
The more recent account of Hatikhuli describes a landscape where more than 300 elephants pass through the village each year, while the community has moved from fear and confrontation towards coexistence. The approach includes food cultivation, understanding elephant movement and maintaining safer routes through the landscape.
This is important because the solution is not simply:
“Give elephants food.”
The deeper solution is:
“Understand why elephants move, understand what the landscape provides, and redesign human activity so that the probability of destructive encounters is reduced.”
Food is one component.
Landscape connectivity is another.
Community participation is another.
Monitoring is another.
Trust is another.
Together, they form a coexistence strategy.
From “problem animal” to neighbour
Perhaps the most remarkable transformation in Hatikhuli is psychological.
Conservation is often discussed through maps, laws, budgets and protected areas.
But coexistence also requires changing the way people perceive wildlife.
When an elephant is repeatedly described as a “killer”, “raider”, “menace” or “intruder”, fear becomes part of the social landscape.
Fear can lead to chasing.
Chasing can lead to panic.
Panic can lead to injury.
Injury can lead to retaliation.
Retaliation can lead to elephant deaths.
And every violent encounter makes the next encounter more dangerous.
Breaking this cycle requires changing the narrative.
Hatikhuli's Hati Bondhu philosophy explicitly argues that humans have occupied elephant habitats, degraded their food resources and contributed to the conditions producing conflict. Its approach is therefore built around empathy, tolerance and coexistence.
That does not mean pretending elephants are harmless.
They are not.
A wild elephant is a powerful animal and human safety must always come first.
Coexistence is not the absence of boundaries.
It is the intelligent management of boundaries.
Corridors are not just lines on a map
One of the most important lessons from Hatikhuli is the importance of movement corridors.
An elephant reserve is useful.
A protected forest is useful.
But if an elephant population is trapped inside isolated habitat patches, conservation becomes increasingly fragile.
Elephants move.
Their social groups require space.
Seasonal resources change.
Water availability changes.
Food availability changes.
Breeding and social behaviour influence movement.
Climate variability can alter resource distribution.
Therefore, a corridor is not simply a strip of land coloured green on a government map.
It is a functional ecological connection.
India's 2023 corridor assessment identified 150 ground-validated elephant corridors across 15 range states. The Government has called on states and Union Territories to take steps to protect and conserve them.
But identification is only the beginning.
A corridor that exists on paper but is blocked by a road, railway, settlement, mining activity, fencing or other infrastructure is not a functioning corridor.
This is where elephant conservation meets infrastructure planning.
When development becomes a barrier
India's development story makes this particularly important.
Roads and railways connect people.
Electricity networks power economies.
Mines supply materials.
Industries create employment.
Cities expand.
But infrastructure can also fragment wildlife landscapes.
The Government reported 81 elephant casualties from train collisions between 2019–20 and 2023–24. The problem has continued in the following years: 12 elephants were killed in train collisions in 2024–25, alongside 104 electrocution deaths and 18 poaching incidents, bringing the total reported elephant deaths from these causes to 134. In 2025–26, train-hit casualties increased to 22, while 80 elephants died from electrocution and 10 from poaching, for a total of 112 deaths. The period also saw a major tragedy in December 2025, when a passenger train in Assam hit and killed seven elephants. These figures show that railway infrastructure remains a significant threat to elephant movement and survival. Measures now include speed restrictions, underpasses, ramps, fencing, detection systems and other interventions at identified locations, but the continuing casualties highlight the need for stronger implementation, monitoring and landscape-level planning.
This illustrates an important principle:
Development and conservation should not be treated as mutually exclusive choices.
The question is whether infrastructure is designed with ecological movement in mind.
A railway crossing an elephant corridor should not be treated as an ordinary railway section.
A highway through an elephant landscape should not be designed as though the surrounding forest were empty land.
An industrial project near a corridor should not evaluate only its immediate project boundary.
Environmental impact assessment must increasingly ask a landscape-scale question:
What happens to animal movement after this infrastructure is built?
Technology can help-but technology cannot replace habitat
The story of railway collisions also shows why human–elephant coexistence increasingly requires a combination of ecology, technology and local knowledge.
Tamil Nadu provides an important example.
In the Madukkarai forest range near Coimbatore, an AI-enabled elephant monitoring system was developed along a vulnerable railway stretch. The system uses 12 camera towers equipped with thermal and conventional cameras, covering key elephant-crossing areas. The cameras provide coverage on both sides of the railway line, while data are processed in real time and alerts are communicated to forest and railway personnel.
By September 2024, reports said the system had detected more than 500 instances of elephants approaching or crossing the railway track, demonstrating how technology can provide early warning rather than waiting for a collision to happen.
This represents an important shift in thinking.
Instead of waiting for an elephant to appear on the railway track and responding after the danger has emerged, technology can help anticipate movement and create a window for prevention.
Artificial intelligence, cameras, thermal imaging, sensors and real-time monitoring can therefore become powerful tools for reducing risk.
But there is an important limitation.
An alert can tell a farmer or railway operator that an elephant is approaching.
It cannot create a forest.
A camera can detect an elephant.
It cannot restore a corridor.
A warning system can slow a train.
It cannot compensate for permanent habitat loss.
Technology should therefore be treated as a support system, not a substitute for ecological planning.
The strongest future model is not:
technology instead of habitat protection.
It is:
technology + habitat protection + corridors + community participation + responsible infrastructure.
That is the real lesson.
Kerala: Another lesson-coexistence also means making space
Kerala offers another important example of why human–elephant coexistence cannot depend on a single solution.
In Wayanad, one approach has been to address the problem at the landscape level rather than repeatedly dealing with elephants after they enter settlements. Through an elephant-corridor securement initiative, families living within the Wayanad elephant corridor voluntarily relocated to an alternative site outside the corridor. The families were provided replacement land, houses and basic amenities. The idea was not simply to move elephants away from people, but to restore a landscape in which elephants could move with less pressure and communities could live with greater safety.
Kerala has also explored technology-based prevention. Researchers from Kerala Agricultural University and Government Model Engineering College, Thrikkakara, have developed work around an “Elephant Alert” early-warning system to help detect elephant movement and provide advance warning to people in vulnerable areas. Such approaches show how technology can become a bridge between wildlife movement and human safety.
These examples matter because they demonstrate two complementary principles: sometimes coexistence requires giving elephants space to move, and sometimes it requires giving people enough information and time to respond safely.
The lesson is therefore not that Kerala has “solved” human–elephant conflict. It has not. Kerala continues to face serious challenges, particularly in Wayanad and other forest-fringe landscapes. But the state also demonstrates that coexistence can be pursued through corridor restoration, voluntary community participation, early warning and preventive planning — rather than relying only on capture or conflict response.
Climate change adds another layer
Human–elephant conflict cannot be separated entirely from climate and environmental change.
Elephants respond to the distribution of food and water.
Climate change can alter rainfall patterns, drought intensity, vegetation productivity and water availability.
Land-use change can compound these pressures.
A fragmented landscape has less flexibility.
When food becomes scarce in one part of a landscape, elephants may have fewer alternative routes.
Agricultural crops can then become attractive because they are concentrated, nutritious and seasonally predictable.
This creates a difficult feedback:
habitat degradation → reduced natural food availability → greater crop dependence → more conflict → greater hostility → greater risk to elephants and people.
Breaking that chain requires restoring ecological function, not merely controlling individual animals.
Why “feed, don't fight” should not be misunderstood
The Hatikhuli story is inspiring.
But it should not be turned into a simplistic formula that can be copied everywhere without ecological assessment.
Planting crops for elephants may work under certain landscape and community conditions.
It may not work everywhere.
Artificially concentrating elephants can potentially create new risks if poorly designed.
Food provisioning must therefore be scientifically monitored.
Which crops are planted?
Where are they planted?
How large is the area?
How does it affect elephant movement?
Does it change crop-raiding behaviour?
Does it attract elephants towards settlements?
Does it create disease or nutritional risks?
How does it interact with natural habitat restoration?
What happens during drought?
Who pays for the food?
Who owns the land?
Who bears the risk?
These are essential questions.
The true lesson of Hatikhuli is therefore not simply “feed elephants.”
It is:
Understand elephants, understand people, understand the landscape, and design solutions around all three.
The economics of coexistence
There is also an economic argument for protecting elephants.
A healthy elephant landscape supports biodiversity, ecosystem functions and nature-based tourism.
Protected forests and wildlife landscapes generate employment through tourism, guiding, transport, hospitality, conservation work and local enterprises.
More importantly, ecosystems provide services that are rarely fully reflected in conventional economic accounting.
Forests regulate water.
Vegetation stores carbon.
Biodiversity supports ecological resilience.
Healthy landscapes reduce certain forms of environmental degradation.
Elephants themselves contribute to ecosystem processes.
Therefore, elephant conservation should not be seen simply as government expenditure.
It is an investment in natural capital.
The challenge is to ensure that the economic benefits of conservation reach the communities living closest to elephants.
If tourism earns money while farmers bear the crop losses, the economic model is inequitable.
If conservation generates employment, compensation, infrastructure, education and local enterprise, then elephants can become part of a broader rural development strategy.
That is the direction in which coexistence needs to move.
India needs to move from conflict management to coexistence planning
For decades, much of wildlife conflict management has focused on responding after an elephant enters a human settlement.
People are alerted.
Forest officials arrive.
Elephants are driven away.
Sometimes they are translocated.
Compensation is paid.
Then the cycle begins again.
This is necessary emergency management.
But it is not enough.
A more ambitious model would begin much earlier.
Before a road is constructed, identify elephant movement routes.
Before a railway line is upgraded, identify collision hotspots.
Before settlements expand, map wildlife movement.
Before agricultural landscapes are intensified, identify conflict-prone zones.
Before fencing is installed, understand how it affects elephant movement.
Before compensation is calculated, identify what preventive investments could reduce repeated losses.
This means integrating elephant conservation into:
land-use planning, infrastructure planning, agricultural policy, disaster-risk reduction, rural development, climate adaptation and local governance.
The elephant should not be considered only when the Forest Department receives a complaint.
It should be considered when the landscape itself is being planned.
And what about the farmer?
Perhaps this is the most important question of all.
If we want villagers to tolerate elephants, we must also make sure that villagers are not abandoned.
A conservation model that tells a poor farmer to sacrifice repeatedly for biodiversity will eventually create resentment.
Instead, coexistence should provide tangible benefits.
Crop-loss compensation should be rapid and transparent.
Community-based insurance mechanisms could be explored.
Elephant-friendly crops can be tested where scientifically appropriate.
Buffer plantations can reduce exposure.
Early-warning networks can protect people.
Village-level response teams can reduce panic.
Local youth can be trained as wildlife monitors.
Women can participate in conservation decision-making.
Eco-tourism revenue can be shared locally.
Schools can teach children about elephant behaviour and safe responses.
And communities should participate in deciding where corridors and feeding areas are established.
The people living beside elephants cannot be treated merely as beneficiaries of conservation. They must be treated as conservation partners.
Hatikhuli's greatest achievement may not be the number of elephants
It is tempting to celebrate the figure:
More than 300 elephants pass through Hatikhuli every year.
That is remarkable.
But perhaps the more important achievement is something that cannot easily be measured.
A community changed its relationship with an animal.
The elephant changed from an enemy into a neighbour.
The farm changed from a battlefield into a shared landscape.
Food became a conservation tool.
Mapping became a conflict-prevention tool.
Community participation became a wildlife-management tool.
And tolerance became a form of conservation infrastructure.
That is much bigger than a single village.
The elephant does not know where our boundaries end
A forest boundary is a human decision.
A district boundary is a human decision.
A state boundary is a human decision.
A protected-area boundary is a human decision.
An elephant does not understand any of them.
It follows food.
It follows water.
It follows memory.
It follows other elephants.
It follows landscapes that existed long before our modern administrative maps.
That is why elephant conservation demands something that conventional governance often struggles with:
thinking beyond boundaries.
An elephant may move from one forest division to another, from a protected area into community land, across agricultural fields and eventually into another state.
The conservation landscape therefore has to be larger than the protected area.
World Elephant Day should make us uncomfortable
World Elephant Day is easy to celebrate.
We can share photographs.
We can post quotes.
We can admire elephant families.
We can talk about their intelligence and memory.
We can use the elephant emoji.
But the real meaning of the day is much more uncomfortable.
It asks us to confront the contradiction between how much we love elephants and how little space we sometimes leave for them.
World Elephant Day was launched on 12 August 2012 by Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation (Thailand), with the aim of bringing global attention to the threats facing Asian and African elephants.
More than a celebration, it is a call for action.
And India's responsibility is particularly significant.
The country holds a major share of the world's wild Asian elephants. India has Project Elephant, Elephant Reserves, protected areas, identified corridors, scientific institutions and dedicated forest personnel.
But the future of elephants will not be determined only inside protected forests.
It will be determined in the spaces between them.
It will be determined in villages.
On farms.
Along railway tracks.
Beside highways.
Around mines.
Near growing towns.
Inside development plans.
And in the decisions communities make every day.
From conflict to coexistence
The story of Hatikhuli offers a profound message.
When elephants entered farms, the obvious response was to chase them away.
But chasing an animal away does not solve why it came there.
If the forest has insufficient food, it will search elsewhere.
If the corridor is blocked, it will find another route.
If its traditional pathway has become a settlement, it cannot simply disappear.
If agricultural crops offer abundant food, the incentive to enter farms remains.
Therefore, the solution must address the underlying conditions.
Hatikhuli's experiment began with something remarkably human:
compassion.
But compassion alone did not create the transformation.
It was combined with food cultivation, community involvement, understanding elephant movement, corridor thinking and local conservation leadership.
That combination is what makes the story important.
Perhaps the future of conservation is not about keeping wildlife away from people
For much of modern conservation, the ideal has been to create protected spaces where wildlife can live and people can stay outside.
That remains essential for many species and landscapes.
But in a country as densely populated and ecologically diverse as India, conservation cannot depend entirely on separating humans and wildlife.
People and wildlife will continue to share landscapes.
The question is whether that sharing will be chaotic and violent, or planned and intelligent.
This is where the concept of coexistence becomes more important than the older idea of simply “conflict mitigation.”
Conflict mitigation asks:
How do we reduce the damage when conflict happens?
Coexistence asks:
How do we design the landscape so that conflict becomes less likely in the first place?
That is a much more ambitious question.
The lesson from Assam is bigger than elephants
Hatikhuli is not just an elephant story.
It is a story about how environmental problems can sometimes be solved by changing the question.
Instead of asking:
How do we control wildlife?
Ask:
What ecological need is bringing wildlife into human spaces?
Instead of:
How do we protect our farms from elephants?
Ask:
How can farming and elephant movement be planned together?
Instead of:
How do we build infrastructure around nature?
Ask:
How do we build infrastructure without destroying ecological connectivity?
Instead of:
How do we compensate communities after conflict?
Ask:
How do we make coexistence economically viable for communities before conflict happens?
And instead of:
How do we save elephants?
Perhaps the better question is:
How do we build a landscape in which elephants do not need saving from us?
A different kind of development
India is entering a period of enormous infrastructure and economic expansion.
Roads will be built.
Railways will expand.
Cities will grow.
Industries will require land.
Agriculture will intensify.
Energy infrastructure will increase.
The answer is not to stop development.
The answer is to make development ecologically intelligent.
If an elephant corridor is treated as empty land, development may destroy it.
If it is treated as critical ecological infrastructure, development can be redesigned around it.
That is the paradigm shift India needs.
We routinely invest in physical infrastructure because we understand its economic value.
We should also recognise ecological corridors as natural infrastructure.
A functioning elephant corridor is infrastructure for wildlife movement.
A healthy forest is water infrastructure.
A wetland is flood-management infrastructure.
A mangrove is coastal-protection infrastructure.
Biodiversity is natural capital.
Once we begin thinking this way, conservation stops looking like an obstacle to development.
It becomes part of development itself.
On this World Elephant Day, remember Hatikhuli
Somewhere in Assam, elephants that were once feared and chased are now moving through a landscape where people have chosen another path.
They did not solve the problem by pretending elephants were harmless.
They did not solve it by asking farmers to simply tolerate endless losses.
They began by understanding the landscape.
They grew food.
They created safer spaces.
They paid attention to elephant movement.
They involved the community.
They built a relationship.
And slowly, fear began to give way to familiarity.
That may be the most powerful conservation lesson of Hatikhuli.
Coexistence does not begin when elephants become less wild.
It begins when humans become better at sharing the landscape.
The story of Pradip Kumar Bhuyan, Binod Dulu Bora, Hati Bondhu and the people of Hatikhuli reminds us that conservation does not always begin with a large government project, a sophisticated technology or a massive budget.
Sometimes it begins with a farmer asking:
“What if we grow something for them too?”
And sometimes that small question can change an entire relationship.
On World Elephant Day, the choice is ours
We can continue to see an elephant in a farm as a problem.
Or we can see a broken landscape behind the encounter.
We can chase.
Or we can understand.
We can fence every boundary.
Or we can restore the corridors that existed before the fences.
We can compensate after destruction.
Or we can invest in prevention.
We can separate people and wildlife wherever possible.
Or we can learn how to coexist where separation is impossible.
Hatikhuli does not provide a magical solution for every elephant landscape in India.
But it provides something perhaps even more valuable:
proof that attitudes can change, communities can participate, and conflict does not have to be the only story between humans and elephants.
India has protected elephants for decades through laws, reserves and Project Elephant.
The next chapter must be about something deeper:
protecting the relationships between elephants, people and landscapes.
Because ultimately, saving the elephant is not only about saving an animal.
It is about preserving the ecological memory of a landscape, and our own ability to live within it.
This World Elephant Day, perhaps the most meaningful tribute is not simply to say, “Save the elephants.”
It is to ask:
“What kind of India do we want to build, one where elephants are forced to survive around us, or one where both elephants and people have enough space to thrive?”
Hatikhuli has already begun answering that question.
That may be one of the most important lessons an elephant can teach us.
